Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: My father’s Caste Certificate is in paper form and offline. Will I still be required to submit the verification process?

Answer: Yes, although verification will be quick by simply uploading your father’s old certificate as verification. The Patwari will verify your relationship with your father using the Shajra Nasab.

Q2: How long are these certificates valid for?

Answer: SC / ST: A lifetime (unless the government changes the list later on). RBA / ALC: Five (5) years from the issuance date. You must renew your certificate at the end of that period if you live in a backward area. OBC: Five (5) years from the date of issuance. The associated Income Certificate must be updated annually (i.e. every financially).

Q3: Can I apply for RBA if I currently reside in Jammu City? (RBA = Resident of Backward Areas)

Answer: No, to qualify for RBA you must reside in the backward village. You lose eligibility for RBA status if you have permanently left that village for a permanent residence in the city.

Q4: If my application is rejected what do I do next?

Answer: After logging onto the portal. Check the “remarks” section to find out which document was not submitted (for example, latest Jamabandi required). You will then be able to re-apply using the appropriate documentation.

Q5: Is this certificate valid for jobs with the Central Government (for example SSC / UPSC)?

Answer: SC / ST: Yes, in most cases. OBC: J&K has its own OBC list, ensure that your caste appears on the Central Government’s list of OBCs when applying for Central positions. Additionally, you may be required to provide a separate “Central Format OBC Certificate” signed by the Tehsildar when applying for UPSC exams. RBA: RBA is specific to J&K, and in general is not valid for jobs with the Central Government.
